"I have written before that while fans tend to side against the union in these disputes, their interests lay more closely with those of the players than the owners. Fans are best served by the maximization of competition. The owners want to minimize competition for both talent and money, locking in profits unrelated to the performance of their team. The players want profits to be commensurate with on-field performance so that teams will be motivated to win as many games as possible -- and thus compete for players who will help them do so."
